Mom's Corner- Empowering Moms to Raise Healthy Kids
Note from Duong Sheahan:
The cover story for U.S. News & World Report (September 10, 2007) reads, " Kids & Weight: Are parents and schools behind the rise in childhood obesity and eating disorders?"
Several times a week I hear similar headlines, whether through television, radio, or vairous publications. Recently, I caught a portion of Dr. Sanjay Gupta's investigative report on CNN titled, "Fed Up: America's Killer Diet." It broke my heart to see young kids dealing with illnesses that used to only be diagnosed in older adults. How is this possible when we are the wealthiest nation in the world? We spend millions on ground-breaking research; we develop new and innovative products and medications each year, yet the health of our nation appears to be declining and not improving. Remember when everything "fat-free" was hitting the market? Since the fat-free campaign over the last couple of decades, obesity among adults and children has skyrocketed to frightening numbers. Both news media and health publications report that over fifty percent of Americans are obese. Fat-free food is not solving the obesity epidemic.
Are parents and schools really behind the rise in childhood obesity? As a parent, I have to take full responsibility for my child's well-being when it comes to their diet and what I allow them to consume. We cannot blame the government, marketing campaigns, or schools for our children's health issues. We may not be able to control what is knocking at our door; however, we can control what we let in.

Lisa Young

what did surprise me was that Consumer Reports survey
found that the sugar contents of the same cereal brands are less in
other countries. Does this mean that the parents of children in other
countries won’t buy it? Read more
